Georgia Plumbing Institute was founded in the mid- 1980's by John M. Carter, Jr.
Mr. Carter helped thousands of apprentice plumbers and technicians prepare for the various State of Georgia Plumber Licenses Examinations.
Students, both men and women, have been Professional Engineers, City Managers, Inspectors and others, but most have been people that work daily in the field of plumbing.
Of the students who come to all of the class sessions, participate in class discussions, complete the required reading, studying and homework, approximately 90% passed their examination on the first try.
About one-half of all the people who have passed a State of Georgia Plumber License Examination within the last 40 years (2025) attended one of Georgia Plumbing Institute's courses.
Continuing Mr. Carter's tradition of excellence in education, our current owner, James Hobbs (Jimmy), a former GPI student in 2001, taught classes with Mr. Carter starting in 2001 and took over GPI in 2007 upon Mr. Carter's retirement. Jimmy started in the plumbing trade at age 12 with a neighbor who ran a one-man plumbing company in Savannah. Jimmy has held a Master Unrestricted License since attending GPI in 2001. He has a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Tech in Marietta and has worked in the engineering/construction side of the trade since 1978.
Our students have come from all parts of the United States, Canada, South Africa, Panama, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Germany and other countries.
